Productive Garden & Patio

The brief

Having completed extensive interior renovations, the client was keen to bring their outdoor space up to the same standard and sought design support for planted areas in a back private garden and an open, street-facing front garden. To come.

Ideally, the space would support the young family to move seamlessly between the kitchen and patio, providing opportunities to pick herbs and garnish en route.

Design response

The back garden is made of three areas. Kitchen patio doors open onto a sunny terrace with raised brick planters and buff self-binding flooring, reached via steps with a modern brick veneer facing. Here, Mediterranean herbs and sun-loving plants are suited to the warmth of the brick planters.

The planting, in pastel colours, invites a pick-as-you-go approach, offering herbs for the kitchen and edible leaves and flowers to nibble on the way through.

The terrace below has an undulating shady border that frames a small lawn. Shade-tolerant fruit trees, such as morello cherry, were selected alongside key plants that would visually link the space to the upper terrace. Beyond the lawn sits a shed. Trees were selected to provide privacy and link the garden to the park beyond.

Tessa is such a pleasure to work with, and has transformed our garden from a wasteland into a haven of tranquillity with her brilliant planting plan.

Tessa introduced us to a wonderful array of plants suited to our site and in line with our design brief, and developed a fantastic scheme which flows beautifully from the shady beds into the sunny spots.

We are so inspired by what she has created, and she has equipped us to care for it all, with ongoing care recommendations.
