Family Garden
The brief
Bring the garden up to par with the interior and create a space that is functional for all the family, and a joy to look at throughout the year.
Site: A small shady garden with a compacted lawn and an imposing shed.
Requirements:
Improvement of the view from the living room ‘picture window’ year-rounbd, while retaining the existing bike shed.
Space for the boys to play, climb and run!
A route from the shed to the house that prevents mud from coming through the house with the bicycles.
Improvement of the aesthetics of the patio planting.
A spot with a view in which to have a cup of tea.
A washing line and storage space.
Design response
A clean and flexible use of the space provides generous areas for play and relaxation, alongside the smooth passage of bikes.
Layered shade-tolerant planting with a corten pool provides an appealing year-round view from the living room and invites wildlife into the garden.
A new lawn, pathway and patio improve drainage.
The pergola climbing frame has room for football posts behind.
“We can’t thank you enough. I feel total joy and elation when I look outside!
The best bit I’ve discovered this week is when we look down from our bedroom through the extension skylight, our beautiful flower bed is framed like a picture.”
